Pirate Cove Playground Care Fund
All funds raised from here on will be dedicated to the long term care
of the playground. A structure of this type requires special care
and will be maintained by the joint efforts of the City of Wylie Parks and Recreation Department and
the Blackland Prairie Playground Foundation.

Dear Community Member,
WE
DID IT! The Playground is built and the children are enjoying it every
day. The location of the Pirate Cove Playground is in Founders Park,
which is behind Wylie High School, just
east of the baseball fields behind the new Pirate Stadium. Many things
about this community-built project make it very exciting.
First
on the list is the fact that our children were involved in the
designing of the playground. On Design Day, September 26, 2003 we met
with the elementary school children to gather their ideas. A designer
from Leathers & Associates, Inc. (www.leathersassociates.com), a
world-renowned playground design firm, and originator of the
community-built playground process, spent the day visiting the future
playground site, meeting with children and volunteers, and designing
the playground. As part of our effort to make this playground a
wonderful place for all the children in our area we have made sure to
create a fully handicap accessible, ADA compliant, design. Many special
features have been integrated into the plans. We hope to meet the
playground needs of all our children.
Another exciting element is the
volunteer effort required to accomplish this fantastic plan. Every
single nut, bolt, board, slide and swing was put into place by a
volunteer in a barn-raising style event. Volunteers worked in four hour
shifts for six days, sun up to sun down, building our new playground.
During that time we served two meals, lunch and dinner, and provided
childcare for working volunteers with small children.
And the final exciting part is how much bigger and better a playground we
brought to our community by fundraising and building it ourselves. We
are still accepting donations from supporters in the community.
Business and
individual donors will be recognized by name in a variety of ways.
Plaques, fence pickets, hand-print tiles and a large sign at the
playground entrance will let everyone know who has been involved in
bringing the playground to our children. All donations are
tax-deductible. We raised $125,000 for the playground. If
